I paint cool, serene landscapes filled with waves — scenes that appear calm at first glance, yet beneath the surface, fragments of disaster quietly unfold. The ocean in my work is both peaceful and unsettling, a space where beauty and vulnerability coexist. I capture this tension through Korean traditional painting techniques, layering ink and pigment to create delicate shifts of tone, gentle ripples, and wide-open horizons.

Modern life is abundant, fast, and overflowing with comfort, yet tragedy arrives without warning. A wave rises suddenly, like a crisis breaking into our ordinary days. Within still water I embed collapsing structures, faint traces of destruction, and memories of events that disrupt stability. These images suggest that beneath every calm moment, there may be a hidden story — a fracture, a wound, a storm not yet dissipated.

In my paintings, waves carry not only disaster but also possibility. They move, retreat, and return — like the cycles of human life. Through them, I reflect on how individuals endure uncertainty, rebuild after collapse, and continue forward. Quiet blues and pale spaces give the viewer room to breathe, while subtle details invite closer observation, revealing what initially goes unnoticed.

Ultimately, this body of work expresses a world where beauty and tragedy are never separate. Just as the ocean holds both abundance and ruin, we too live in a space where fragility and resilience coexist. My paintings ask the viewer to pause, look again, and consider what lies beneath the surface of stillness.
