Han Hye Soo
I am Hyesoo Han, a painter who builds a visual world centered around waves, using traditional East Asian painting techniques and materials as the foundation. In my work, waves serve as a visual metaphor to reflect and mediate various aspects of contemporary society.
I seek to capture the layered contradictions and tensions we encounter in the flow of life and translate them into my own visual language.
Formally, I explore how the traditional East Asian motif of waves can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Recently, my focus has turned toward engaging more intimately with phenomena closely tied to my own life—observing them from multiple perspectives and depicting them with greater depth and nuance.
My motivation for painting often stems from a desire to offer empathy and solace to those worn down by conflict and division. I believe that art can reach beyond the personal, toward a broader collective experience. With this in mind, I hope my paintings resonate with fellow citizens living in our shared present, evoking both reflection and emotional resonance.
