Youyeong Seo
I am Youyeong Seo, an artist who explores the way we form relationships through the image of a “house.”
The recurring motif of the house in my work symbolizes the human figure in contemporary life.
As we pass through childhood, school, and society, we each grow into unique beings with our own colors and textures.
These individual traits and values are embodied in the form of a house, which I portray as a living, personal entity.
No one can live in complete isolation.
The houses of various colors and shapes gathering together on a single canvas — intertwining, colliding, or drifting apart — represent the landscape of our relationships.
To visualize this sense of connection, I often use ropes in my work.
The rope serves as both a trace of human bonds and a metaphor for the invisible tension and flow that exist between people.
The thick, rough textures layered on the canvas resemble the complexities and harshness of the society we live in.
Yet, the bright and vivid houses resting upon them embody my belief in the warmth that we create despite it all.
When countless colors come together and spread harmoniously, rather than appearing chaotic, they tell a story of the beauty and possibility that arise when diverse beings coexist.
Through these small houses, I wish to quietly share stories of our interconnected lives and the hope that resides within them.
