Lee Yu-mi (Haerang)
Hanji has been a defining presence throughout my life. For over thirty years, I have explored its material depth as a hanji craft artist, eventually expanding beyond traditional papier-mâché techniques into abstract painting. By layering and repeatedly pounding sheets of hanji, I discovered unique textures that led me to incorporate bimji—twisted hanji cords—into my work. This process allows the tactile qualities of three-dimensional craft to be translated onto a two-dimensional surface.
Hanji is as essential to me as breathing. Mixed with paste and shaped by hand, it responds intuitively, while its fibers intertwine to create new colors and forms. Each work is a quiet reflection of life’s emotions, created through repetition, contemplation, and dedication, with the hope of resonating deeply with the viewer.
