Sim Min Kyung
I am artist Sim Min Kyung, who projects the synesthetic freedom of the soul—achieved through the psychological reconciliation of music and painting—onto the image of a cat. Through music, I dream of another world and purify my psyche from the hardships of reality. Within this awakened inner space, music opens the realm of a free spirit, evokes poetic reverie, and grants possibility to every latent sense of longing and nostalgia.
These awakened imaginative images become “visible music,” standing in the in-between where ideals and reality communicate, and metaphorically embodying an intimate sensitivity to hope as the possibility of life. In this dreamlike world, anyone can become the cat that symbolizes poetic metaphor, or the nameless forests and waters in memory that signify ideals. I believe that fantasy and ideals manifest through life, granting meaning to the meaningless and purifying the impurities of the mind.
Thus, the cat in my Musical Cat Landscapes represents myself as an artist—receiving life’s possibilities through artistic reverie—and simultaneously becomes the viewer who resonates with my monologue. The landscape united with the cat signifies the entirety of this dreamlike, ideal world in which they dwell.
Through my creative process, I seek to achieve a transformation of existence from the darkest places, while racing endlessly toward what is unseen yet visible, unheard yet audible. I do not remain confined to reality; instead, I run forward together with many others toward “that place where one truly resides.”
