Kim Woon Kyu
The Flow of the Mind’s Eye series is a body of paintings that reflects the dynamic and organic force of strokes born from chance, together with the heightened tactility emphasized by the use of objects. The works are centered on the themes of stroke (畫) and color (色), reinterpreting the pictorial possibilities of the brushstroke, inspired by traditional ink-and-color painting, yet rendered through a contemporary artistic sensibility.
Paint is mixed with stone granules and applied not with a brush but with a knife onto canvas, producing surfaces that may at first appear to resemble conventional monochrome painting. However, upon closer observation, the works diverge considerably in texture and sensibility from the formal qualities typically evoked in monochrome or Dansaekhwa painting. Rather than adhering to a methodology of color, Kim Unkyu seeks to articulate his own visual language within the context of the aesthetics of the stroke.
The Flow of the Mind’s Eye series also explores how the natural environment of Busan—where the artist was born and raised—has profoundly shaped his artistic world. Kim reflects on how the sea, mountains, wind, light, and rhythm of the city have permeated his practice. Like the waves of Busan, the works are dynamic, unfolding as textured visions that reveal a new perspective within the artist’s universe.
